Drops, whatever they are for, is a cure. Usually they are used for diseases of the eyes, nose and ears. These organs are vital for a person and the medicine should be used only as prescribed by the doctor, especially if a newborn needs to treat and instill drops.

Modern medicines for instillation usually have a special dropper cap, which is convenient to use. But if it is not, at the same time as purchasing the drug, you should take care of buying a pipette. It should be remembered that the pipettes for the ears, eyes and nose must be separate.

It is very difficult for small children to drip drops, whether it be eyes, ears or a nose, the child does not understand and is scared, but let's try to do this together.

General rules for the preparation and conduct of the drip drop procedure

• If you have to use a pipette, first put it in a glass container and pour over boiling water;
• Prepare a few balls of clean cotton;
• When instilling, only 2-3 drops of the medicine will be required, therefore, the pipette should not be completely filled to avoid overdose. Gather the required volume and make sure that the drops do not fall into the rubber part, and for this, keep it upright.

Medicines intended for instillation should not be cold. This is especially true for drops for ears and eyes. Before use, it is necessary to warm them at least to normal body temperature. If the drops are packaged in an ampoule, you can hold them for some time in your hands. If the drops are large, then you can take a small container (for example, a teaspoon) and dip it in hot water. While the spoon is still warm, pour a few drops of medicine into it that will take heat from it. This procedure must be carried out very carefully so as not to overheat drops, which, due to temperature, can lose their qualities.

Step-by-step eye drop instillation procedure

1. Newborns are usually placed on their backs; older children can be buried in the sitting position.
2. With your fingers, spread the eyelids as follows: with the index, we pull the eyelid slightly up, and with the thumb, with the cotton placed under it, we lower the lower eyelid slightly down.
3. With your free hand, pipette 1-2 drops of medicine into the lower eyelid (or closer to the temporal corner of the eye, or closer to the nose).
4. Hold your hand for a short time on a closed eyelid so that the child does not open it. This will increase the effectiveness of the drug.
5. Lightly rub the eye in the direction from the temple to the nose.

Drop drops in the ear

1. Pre-clean the ear canal with a cotton swab.
2. Put the child on its side, with a sick ear up.
3. Take a few drops of the medicine. Remember: the medicine for burying the ears should be warm.
4. Pull the auricle slightly down and perpendicular to the head.
5. Put as many drops in the ear as the doctor has prescribed, and cover it with a cotton swab for a while.

Nasal instillation

It is possible to instill drops in a nose to small children in a prone position, half-sitting and sitting with a thrown back head. This procedure is best done with an assistant.

1. Pre-clean the nasal passages of the infant from mucus with a small syringe. Older children just blow their nose (Read how and how to clean the nose).
2. Pipette a small amount of medicine into a pipette.
3. When instilling the left half of the nose, tilt the child’s head to the right and vice versa.
4. Enter 2-3 drops into the nose, being careful not to touch the nasal passage with a pipette so as not to cause pain in case the child makes a sharp movement.
5. Leave the baby’s head in the same position for a short time so that the medicine is evenly distributed over the nasal mucosa.
