What a child can and should be able to do at 11 months

11 months is the age of improvement of previously acquired skills. The basic physical and mental skills of the child are already practically formed. The main task of parents is to support the baby and help him improve.

A month before a year, a child pleases parents with qualitative indicators of development rather than quantitative. All the skills that the baby has mastered in the incomplete first year of his life are now being intensely improved.

What a baby can do at 11 months

At eleven months, the child's day regimen shifts toward a reduction in daytime sleep. Most children at this age sleep 2 times during the day, but some babies go on one day's sleep. The nature of spending time during the day also changes, and the behavior of the little one changes.

At 11 months, the child already knows so many things that from this age he begins to gradually separate from the adult in social and domestic terms. Moms notice that it becomes a little easier for them, because the period of the complete dependence of the baby on adults is left behind.

What should a child be able to do at 11 months

  • Eleven months is the age of the first steps of the baby. The child has been able to get up at the support for a long time, by the age of 11 months he has already well trained legs and is able to move quite quickly along the support. However, the interest and thirst for knowledge is often so strong that, playing, the baby forgets that he no longer holds, and takes his first steps without any support. Usually children love to stomp their feet and take the initiative to walk themselves, urging the adult to serve as a support. Parents should be puzzled by buying high-quality orthopedic shoes for the baby and be patient, because the child moves on legs still very uncertainly, he constantly needs insurance;
  • On this topic:
  • Able to climb onto a chair, sofa, step;
  • Games are getting harder. A variety of manipulations with objects, a tower of cubes, folding a pyramid - this is part of what a child can do at 11 months. The first signs of a role-playing game appear, which immediately takes the child to a higher stage of development. Kids are trying to roll a doll carriage, rock the dolls in the crib, feed them. The child repeats all this, observing the actions of an adult. It is through the role-playing game that children learn the rules of life in society, the norms of social interaction and develop certain stereotypes of gender-role behavior. And although at a young age the child still does not identify his belonging to one or another sex, in the role-playing games the behavior of girls and boys is noticeably different now;
  • The development of thinking becomes obvious and noticeable. The kid masters the simplest mental operations, such as generalization and concretization. This means that he is able to combine objects into groups according to a common feature and vice versa, to isolate single objects from a similar set.Behind this complex formulation is a phenomenon constantly observed in everyday life. For example, if a child is asked to serve the ball without specifying a specific toy, he can serve the inflatable ball, a rubber, plastic ball - everything in his mind falls into the category of balls. At the same time, if parents differentiate toys according to any criterion, then the child will learn to share these toys. For example, if a Lena doll, a Masha doll and a Dasha doll are sitting on a shelf, the baby will bring the desired doll at the request, while maintaining the understanding that these are all dolls. Of course, these mental operations are not yet perfect and the child can combine objects in groups according to completely unexpected signs that are understandable only to him, but everything is ahead;
  • Together with thinking, speech develops. Eleven months is the age of appearance of so-called autonomous speech. This is a very important stage in mastering a speech, since it is directly related to an attempt to call a word an object or action. The name "autonomous" children's speech received because they understand it only within the family. This is such a language of their own, understandable only to the baby and his parents, it is almost impossible for a person of the party to understand what the baby wants to express;
  • In addition to the appearance of autonomous speech, there is another innovation in speech development. Active onomatopoeia - What a child must be able to do at 11 months. How the dog barks, how the cat meows, how the car and the plane buzz, how the bell rings - the kid copies any known sounds as best he can. You can activate this process with the help of special games. My favorite topic is, of course, animals, but you can portray the sounds of any objects;
  • Imitates many gestures and actions of parents (He “reads” a newspaper or a book, holds a telephone receiver to his ear, “cooks” soup in a toy saucepan), he often prefers “adult” objects to toys: a telephone, a TV remote control, spoons, plates;
  • Some babies delight loved ones with real, conscious words. Most often these are the words “mother”, “give”, “on”. In general, the main engine of speech development is the need for the child to communicate their needs, so it is important for parents to stop being too understanding and give the child the opportunity to ask or communicate something;
  • Knows how to trick, understands how to attract the attention of adults. It may begin to whimper so that they pay attention to it or take it in their hands. Realizing that mom becomes more accommodating when he cries, the baby will begin to shed tears for any reason;
  • Actively gesticulates and includes facial expressions to express any feelings: negatively shakes his head or frowns in disagreement, nods affirmatively, waves his hand goodbye, pulls his hands if he wants a hug;
  • At 11 months, you can already try to accustom your child to going to the potty, especially if there are plans for kindergarten. Usually in a month or two, kids learn all the wisdom of this process and begin to ask themselves in most cases. However, if the child categorically does not want to be friends with the pot, this is not scary. Neurologists claim that the parts of the brain that are responsible for accustoming to the toilet fully mature only by 2-2.5 years, so up to this age flaws and problems with the pot are completely normal (See article How to teach a potty);
  • Behavior of the child at the table is getting stronger and developing. At 11 months, children are ready to eat food from the general table: they show increased food interest, are able to chew and swallow pieces. Many kids at this age are already drink from a mugtry on their own eat with a spoon. Often for mom, it becomes a signal that it is time to wean the baby from the chest. Of course, from the point of view of nutrition, breast milk is no longer the main source of nutrition, but from the point of view of the relationship between mother and baby, this is a great way to keep in touch with the baby, so do not rush into excommunication too much (See article How to wean from the chest).

Development test

A child develops normally, in accordance with age if:

  • Able to get up in a crib or playpen, holding on to a support;
  • Able to crawl, kneeling;
  • Able to clap;
  • Able to pronounce onomatopoeic words;
  • Able to hold in his hand a spoon, a mug;
  • Able to point to objects that an adult calls;
  • Able to string rings on the core of the pyramid, and put cubes on top of each other (at least 2-3 cubes).

If the delay in physical and mental development is obvious, you should show the child with a neurologist or pediatrician.

The main thing - remember, each child is individual!

After a month, the baby will blow out the first candle on the cake and continue to delight mom and dad with their achievements and skills. If at 11 months the child has not yet learned something, he will certainly catch up with his peers in the near future. (See article How to celebrate your first birthday)

    For almost 11 months my daughter is a real hurricane. Indeed, she began to sleep less - she didn’t have time - so many little things. You can’t hold it in your hands - but this does not facilitate the situation ....

  2. Olya

    It is very important at 11 months to accustom the child to the potty. From my own experience I know that the sooner the better. When they get older, the more they begin to understand what is more convenient and easier, the more difficult.

  3. Karina

    My baby is already eleven months old, but somehow he is in no hurry to walk. He is not afraid to hold on to a support (sofa, for example), and move around him, but when I try to drive him by the handles, he is afraid.

  4. Elena

    My son is 11 months old and cannot walk without support. He walks well in walkers. I was worried about this, went to a neurologist, she reassured me. Boys can go later until 1 year 4 months. no need to worry. We are waiting for our little one to please with the first steps.

    According to this description, the child prodigies are somehow: they eat themselves, drink from a mug, bark like dogs and feed dolls ....

  6. Svetlana

    Either the article is half nonsense, or my child is behind in development)))))

  7. Maria

    Forgive me, of course, but the skill described is understandable !!! At 11 months, should a child bark and meow? Are you seriously ? I don’t even give a word to my word, And I don’t know how to assemble a pyramid, but I know very well the word “not allowed” and reacts very much to it, responds, gives. Well, now my child is lagging behind in development?

  8. Natalya

    Doesn’t know how to assemble a pyramid at 11 months? .. hmm .. mine from 8 collects it completely

  9. Olga

    I thought that ... and we, judging by the hundred, well done. They began to walk at 7.5 months, we chew everything in a row, we call the cat “-ki”, though there is no 50% perseverance with the pyramid))) thanks for the article.

    I really love animals and teach a child to the stable, we walk horses, we feed ducks to ponds, we feed pigeons on the street, fish at home, squirrels in the forest, so my daughter is very interested, she knows and shows animals in pictures and who shows how she screams. It's like to do.
