Can I drink alcohol while breastfeeding

Everyone knows that everything that enters the body of a nursing mother enters the baby's body with milk. Nevertheless, many modern women are still confident that small doses of alcohol can be consumed during breastfeeding. Moreover, some online communities recommend drinking alcohol to lactating women. Women are even advised to drink a glass of beer daily to improve lactation.

breastfeeding alcohol

The first question that a breast-feeding mother should ask herself before drinking: “Will it be good for my child?”. And the answer here is one: "Not". Therefore, if you are able to abstain and not drink alcohol while breastfeeding, do it. Alcohol and its derivatives - POISON, it destroys internal organs and causes irreparable harm to the health of both the drinking mother and the child.

Not all women are able to withstand a complete abandonment of alcohol within two to three years (nine months of pregnancy plus one and a half years of feeding - at least two and a half years). Often a woman does not remember alcohol until she is at the festive table, where she, as it is called, "Out of work". Everyone is having fun while drinking, but she feels deprived and cannot fully participate (as she thinks) in the general fun. If, nevertheless, the desire to support the company and not be a black sheep prevailed over sanity, a woman should take care to minimize the risk associated with drinking and subsequent breastfeeding.

Harm to the child

  • Alcohol affects the nervous system of the child. A child who has tasted breast milk, into which alcohol has passed, will quickly fall asleep. But his sleep will be restless, and he will often wake up. If the mother regularly drinks alcohol, the child has a mental retardation.
  • Alcohol consumption can affect the child’s cardiovascular system: heart rate increases, general weakness appears, blood pressure may decrease.
  • The child is more tormented by intestinal colic. Ethyl alcohol leads to inflammation of the membranes of the esophagus, stomach or intestines. The intestinal absorption function is impaired, due to which vitamins and minerals are poorly absorbed. With frequent use of alcohol, the child gains weight poorly and often lags behind in physical development.
  • Frequent use of alcohol causes the child to become gradually addictive, until the appearance of addiction.

Tips for mom

First:in no case do not drink until the baby has reached the age of three months (at least). The younger the child, the less adapted his body is to the processing of alcohol, and in newborns this ability is not at all. The baby’s liver is not able to process even a small amount of alcohol, which means that all the harmful substances in the alcoholic drink will poison the internal organs of the baby.

Of course, the human body is affected not so much by the alcohol itself as its quantity, quality and type of drink. It is clear that if a woman drinks a glass of good red wine or half a liter of cheap vodka, then the harm done to the body of both the mother and the child will vary in severity. The amount of drink consumed is also important - the more drunk, the longer ethyl alcohol will be excreted from the body, the more it gets into the baby's body through mother's milk.

Hence the second tip - if you decide to drink alcohol, either express before drinking so that you can give your child “clean” milk, or maintain a gap in feeding for at least three hours (provided that you have not drunk more than 100 ml of weak alcohol). If you drank vodka or cognac, then 100 ml of this drink will be excreted from the body for at least 5 hours.

It is also important how often a nursing mother consumes alcohol. According to research by Western doctors, if a woman, while breastfeeding, drank once or twice a month (high-quality weak alcohol in small doses), then this did not cause significant and noticeable damage to the child’s health. However, in Russia no one can vouch for the fact that the wine purchased in a supermarket will be as high-quality as the same wine bought, say, in France.

We should not forget about the harmful impurities contained in alcohol. In addition to ethyl alcohol (which is often made from low-quality raw materials and is poorly cleaned), alcoholic beverages include chemical dyes and concentrates, especially in women’s favorite liquors and wines - they are often faked using cheap and unhealthy additives. Think - do you want them to enter the body of your precious child?

Alcohol negatively affects breast milk lactation. And if you don’t have much milk, then drinking alcohol, breastfeeding can be negated ...

And the last - since for doctors around the world the issue of drinking alcohol while breastfeeding remains open, it is better to refuse to drink alcohol as long as you are breast-feeding a baby.

Myth:Beer enhances lactation. This is a myth, drinking beer does not affect lactation (See about it).

Oh, what are you ?! What alcohol is by no means impossible. Alcohol is generally not advisable, but with breastfeeding categorically. It turns out that the child receives this muck with milk.

God, ladies, that it’s a habit to condemn everyone forever, since this topic was open, so mothers are interested in how to use a small amount of alcohol in order not to harm the baby, no one talks about alcoholism or the weekly use of these drinks, instead of to judge someone, it would be better to share their knowledge. And the fact that alcohol harms a child is already a well-known fact and once again evoking guilty feelings among young mothers does not do you much honor. nobody is perfect, and you including !!

It may be useful to drink once a year to calm the nerves. As a former ardent opponent of alcohol and smoking, I myself doubt that this is so terrible. Maybe if you relax once, there will be no harm. And then 1 stress, and it accumulates like a snowball, I became angry and sad .... 🙁

I agree with Olga! The main thing is the ownership of information, for this, in fact, we turn to similar articles. The one who thumps systematically, I'm sorry, I wanted to shit on your articles! But if you have dr or ng ahead, it is useful to find out how much alcohol will be excreted from the body and, accordingly, based on this, prepare a bank of milk in a certain amount in advance !!!
Girls, dear, do not lose your head, we do not live in the Stone Age! Sit down in advance and celebrate the holiday without self-flagellation, and when your body is cleansed of alcohol, continue to feed your baby a healthy milk with pleasure!

Asked to share their knowledge ... I went to the wedding of friends at the age of 4 months of a child. We were advised by the parents of the newlyweds to leave the kids at home ... that is, cold and so they could sit comfortably. The eldest (age 2.5 years) stayed with one grandmother until the evening. And the youngest was with my parents. To experience enough. I was not worried about our little daughter. I knew about the wedding 3 months before the date, and the expressed milk was frozen right away. That is, I could afford to try expensive alcohol at a celebration! And naturally there were tides. I took a manual breast pump with me and I easily decanted during the sensations of a rush of milk or when my chest was full. Arrived late, my daughters slept already, and I could completely express my poisoned milk ... and all my expressed milk was given to the baby one day before the wedding. And the fact that the event was expressed, immediately poured. The daughter did not starve. Even one bag of milk remained. But I studied everything before freezing. How much milk a child will need at that age. And so on ... and the natural at first constantly called to find out how you are doing. You never know how thawed milk will not like. Or out of a bottle, he won’t want to eat. So that if something immediately come back
