How to choose a pot for a child

Most moms start thinking about potty training early enough. Often a pot appears in the house when the baby is barely six months old, and he masters the sitting position. In fact, the age when the baby can comprehend all the wisdom of going to the pot is 1.5 - 3 years. It is at this age that the nervous system matures so much that the child becomes able to control the excretory processes and understands that it is inconvenient to do your “toilet” things in panties. A significant role in the training plays the pot itself. The baby on it should be convenient, comfortable and safe, nothing should distract the baby from the main task. Given this, parents need to know how to choose the right pot and which one is best for the baby, so that it helps, rather than slows down the learning process.

How to choose a pot for a child

Types of pots

Depending on the shape, presence or absence of various additional functions, the pots come in different types.

  1. Classic pot. This is the most ordinary pot of round shape, similar to those that were in Soviet times.
  2. Anatomical pot. Such a pot has the shape of a saddle, a back in the back and a protrusion in the front. A child sits on a pot of this type with divorced legs.
  3. Pot with a "skirt". This front pot has a comfortable running board. Convenience lies in the fact that while sitting or getting up, the baby cannot knock over the pot, since its legs are on the “skirt” and fix the position of the pot.
  4. Potty stool. This pot resembles a real highchair with a back and legs. However, instead of sitting in this stool there is a fence that can be easily pulled out to pour the contents.
  5. A toy pot. A pot in the shape of an animal, toy car or any other toy.
  6. Music pot. Such a pot is equipped with special sensors that respond to liquid: the baby pees - the melody turns on.
  7. Folding pot. This is a hiking option for trips and guests. The pot has a hard plastic seat and a soft folding liner that is thrown out after filling.

Almost all modern pots are made of plastic, but if you wish, you can find an enameled pot. Some pots have a lid.

Pots for boy and girl

The physiological characteristics of boys and girls impose some requirements on the shape of the pot, although they are not at all rigid.

  • It is believed that a round pot is better for girls, since you can sit on it with flattened legs.
  • The pot for the boy should ideally have a ledge in front. The kid sits on such a pot as in the saddle, and the protrusion protects the surrounding space from splashes.

Choose the pot correctly

The variety of pots on store shelves confuses all parents. Tips and tricks for choosing this important accessory will help you understand which models deserve attention and which are good only in the window.

  1. When choosing a pot, you need to keep in mind its main purpose and not be distracted by additional functions. So, experts call a music pot or a pot in the form of a toy rather harmful. Music, luminous elements, faces make the child associate a pot with a toy and "lead" away from understanding why this item is needed. In addition, playing on the pot makes the baby sit there longer than necessary, and this is dangerous and not useful for the muscles of the perineum.
  2. The presence of a lid, of course, is a plus, but you can only evaluate it if you do not immediately empty and wash the pot. If there are no such plans, you can close your eyes for the presence or absence of a cover.
  3. The opening of the pot should be wide enough so that the sides do not bite into the legs and ass.
  4. It is very important that the pot is stable. In this sense, models with steps or, as an option, with rubber anti-slip prophylaxis are good.
  5. Plastic pots are definitely more practical and convenient than enameled ones. Plastic can also be disinfected, while the pot itself is much easier. Enameled pots are not to the kids's liking because of the cold sitting, there is no such problem with a plastic pot.
  6. The plastic itself, from which the pot is made, must be of high quality, solid and smooth. Burrs or cracks are unacceptable, such a pot is already unsafe for the baby.
  7. It is good if the pot has a convenient handle. Almost all kids love to pour the contents of the pot onto the toilet themselves, so the handle should be convenient mainly for the child, so that he does not tilt the pot over himself in an attempt to lift it.
  8. If the pot consists of several parts or has a complex shape, make sure that it is easy to disassemble, and all its parts are accessible for washing. Otherwise, inaccessible areas will become a hotbed of germs.

An alternative to the pot is a baby soft toilet seat. It so happens that the baby stubbornly ignores the pot, and begins to walk on the toilet without any problems. In this case, parents should take care of finding an attack so that the baby can sit on the toilet himself.

Sometimes parents, in order to quickly accustom a child to the potty, strive to put pots in each room. In fact, the problems with training are not related to the availability of the pot, but rather a matter of skills in controlling urination and defecation. Pots in each room, on the contrary, mislead the child. It will be better if the pot is in the nursery or in the toilet. The kid should understand that for “these matters” if there is one specially designated place.

We bought our baby the most ordinary round pot, while we are in the process of learning. And my sister has a musical pot, so the child was first afraid of him, and now only plays with him.

I am categorically against combining entertainment with a child’s toilet. All three of their children bought a stable potty chair. A very useful article for young mothers. Well, do not invent that a boy and a girl need some special pots. Choose just your favorite color and no sharp edges.
