How to clean up the wardrobe: 4 principles of storage of children's clothing

Hello! Undoubtedly, every family has the most things for a child, so putting an order in a closet becomes an urgent problem for a mother. Kids grow up so fast that sometimes they just don’t have time to buy new clothes and remove small trousers and t-shirts from the shelves. I put things in order in the closet for a long time, or rather, immediately after the birth of the eldest daughter. By that time, I had already mastered the basic principles of maintaining cleanliness and order in the house and applied them in practice. So I can assure you: if you have no idea where to start and how to organize the storage of children's things rationally, you are not in vain reading this article. I will give you a detailed action plan based on my personal experience.

order in the closet

In general, the principles of storage of children's and adult things are similar, but there are several nuances. It is important to consider the small growth of the child, his inability to neatly fold clothes (although this depends on age) and other features. By the way, my eldest daughter is 4 years old, and watching me fold up my socks and fold up my T-shirts, she always helps a lot. And she already began to do pretty well.

So where do you start?

Step 1. Preparation

Put all the things on the floor. Wipe all the shelves and evaluate the places where you will store the baby's clothes - ideally, this should be a closet. Why do I recommend this option? The cabinet is more capacious than a dresser, and inside there are beams for hangers and storage space, except for shelves - for example, the lower part and doors, which can also be used if everything is organized correctly. Personally, I see the obvious advantages of the wardrobe. The chest of drawers is also good furniture, it is convenient to fold different things into it for storage, you can put on socks and underwear. Only in terms of functionality, this is still not the best option.

There should be plenty of space in the closet. A big plus if there are drawers. You also need to purchase boxes or baskets that match the shelves in width and depth. Instead of one big one, you can put a few small ones - it all depends on how you like best. It’s convenient to fold clothes in them, and in this case you don’t have to rummage around the closet. It will be enough to put forward one box or basket to take or put in place the necessary thing.

If you see that objectively there are not enough shelves or places for vertical storage, organizers - hinged shelves will come to the rescue. They perfectly solve such a problem. I bought myself one organizer, which is very glad. It is incredibly comfortable. By the way, hanging shelves come in a variety of sizes and colors, so it’s easy for you to find the best option for yourself.

If you have only one child, boxes, baskets, additional shelves you may not need. Of course, a lot depends on the capacity of the cabinet. I have two children, so I still had to come up with different tricks.

Even if you cannot afford global alterations, do not be discouraged. It turns out to change at least something for the better - it’s already good. Yes, not everyone will have money to buy organizers and other similar devices, but there is always a way out - you just need to. Try to make something with your own hands from cardboard - for example, shelves. You probably have a piece of unnecessary cloth or a box at home - all of this can be used if you connect your imagination. Just act on the basis of improvised materials and your capabilities.

Pay attention to the crossbar: it is better to install it at such a height that the kids can get the right things from it and hang them back. I placed mine a little lower, and put another one on top. So I got two whole rows of crossbars.

This is the end of the most difficult. We move on.

Step 2. Sorting things

Now is the time to sort out baby clothes. I share it only in the heavy winter, autumn and spring (overalls, jackets, hats, scarves, mittens) and the rest. I like the Japanese method of Marie Kondo: she suggests not storing things according to seasonality, but storing everything together, without removing anything on the mezzanine. It seems strange at first, but in practice it’s really convenient - for example, you start to wear some light things that used to lie down not only in the warm season, but also in winter. True, this idea applies only to a large dressing room.

Then you need to sort the remaining things into subcategories: for example, T-shirts, home clothes, pants, sweaters and more. Do it at your discretion.

Step 3. Choosing places and ways of storing clothes

After sorting, it's time to go directly to the organization of storage of things. They can be hung on the shoulders, but if you have only a small and compact cabinet, it is better to lay them in piles. Just hanging clothes takes up much more space than folded clothes, but you need to save space.

I’ll tell you how I organized the storage of children's things. On the upper shelves, I remove clothes that are currently practically not used - for example, summer shorts in the winter or panties for growth. It is convenient to store them in vacuum bags or cases.

I put sweaters, warm blouses, blouses and t-shirts for the exit, skirts and jeans on the middle shelves. Below are pajamas, home clothes, T-shirts, panties, socks. Therefore, my children can change their clothes for the night after an evening shower or in the morning to get home clothes, including underwear. It helps me to instill in them the skills of independence.

Many mothers are interested in how best to fold children's things. Storage is horizontal and vertical - the second method is advised by Marie Kondo, and it seemed to me more convenient.

store things upright

The basic principle is to form rectangles from things, the height of which does not exceed the height of the box or shelf. With this folding technique, you can find the right thing much faster.

On the crossbeams, I hang out the clothes that we often wear on the way out - for example, in a kindergarten. These are costumes and dresses. I never put them on shelves and always hang them on my shoulders. If there is not enough space, you can use a special hanger with additional hooks, on which up to 5 hangers are suspended.

This device withstands light casual clothes and saves space. By the way, Marie Kondo recommends sorting things on her shoulders by color, purpose, lightness. For example, jackets and sweaters can be located on the left, and blouses and blouses on the right. Here you need to be guided by how convenient it is for you.

On the cabinet door I placed some hooks so that the children could hang their home clothes on them before going to bed or pajamas in the morning.

On the other door I have a pocket organizer with rubber bands and daughters' hairpins. It’s also convenient to fold tights in them.

Socks and panties are stored in cells in a box, which I myself wrapped in a beautiful cloth. If possible, you can buy an organizer for this.

What else can you think of to streamline storage of things? I advise you to use the lower part of the cabinet - for example, for children's shoes or a box with bedding.

In general, each centimeter can find effective and rational use - this is especially true for small cabinets. Also a great option is to stick on the shelves any pictures or labels indicating what and where is located. The same thing can be done with the chest of drawers.

Step 4. Maintenance of cleanliness and order in the children's closet

Having put things in order in a children's closet, carefully think about how often you will need to clean up it and maintain frequency. I do this once a month, it takes no more than 15 minutes to do everything. Mark all dates on your home calendar so you don’t miss anything.

Finally, I will give you one more tip: make a list of things that you would like to buy or do with your own hands, and then plan a budget or time for making homemade products.

I have a 6-year-old daughter and I try to accustom her to order in the room and her closet, it turns out to be not so simple as it seems, but I show her how to put things on what shelves and what needs to be laid down, I try to translate this in Game. The main thing is to have patience and not freak out at the child, otherwise nothing will come of it.
