Lactation Teas

As we already know, lactation, that is, the production of breast milk, is a hormone-dependent process. Every young mother must have heard about how effective special teas can be to increase lactation. The truth in such advice actually exists, although it is true that teas influence lactation improvement very indirectly.

  1. Any warm drink causes the release of oxytocin, a hormone that is responsible for the rate of flow of milk from the breast, so it’s easier to feed the baby after tea. The breast itself does not overflow and the amount of milk does not increase.
  2. Breast milk also consists of water, so the amount of fluid in the body affects lactation. Fluids should be enough to satisfy the needs of the mother’s body and feed the baby.
  3. Some substances really enhance the sensation of hot flashes of milk. They are useful not only for mothers, but also for babies, as they penetrate into breast milk. Some teas help solve problems with the baby’s tummy, soothe, improve immunity.

Homemade Herbal Tea Recipes

Each mother can make lactogon tea at home. Such drinks are decoctions of various herbs. Plant seeds and herbs needed for brewing are sold in pharmacies. But classic black tea with the addition of milk or even brewed in milk can hardly be called good for increasing lactation. It affects the amount of breast milk no more than a glass of hot water drunk before feeding, but it can adversely affect the quality of the composition. The fact is that cow's milk contains animal protein that can cause allergies in babies. Whole cow milk is not recommended for babies or nursing mothers (See article: Is it possible to give cow milk to infants).

The most popular and effective teas that cause an increase in lactation are the following:

  • Fennel (dill) tea. For a drink you need seeds of these plants, which are brewed with boiling water (1 tbsp.spoon of dry seeds for 1.5 cups of boiling water). After cooling, the drink is ready. You can divide it into several portions and stretch it all day. In addition to fennel and dill, anise or caraway seeds can be used. These plants are related and the effect is approximately the same. These teas are especially popular during colic with crumbs, because they have a carminative effect.
  • Chamomile tea. We are talking about a decoction of chamomile flowers. Chamomile flowers are poured with hot water at the rate of 1 tbsp. spoon in a glass of boiling water and heat in a water bath for 15 minutes. Then the broth needs to be filtered and cooled. Chamomile calms, has an anti-inflammatory effect, but for a baby, “chamomile” milk may be unsafe, since this plant is considered an allergen.
  • Ginger tea. Chopped ginger root should be boiled for several minutes and cool a little. In the classic version, honey and lemon are added to such tea. A nursing mother should be careful with these products because of a possible allergy in the child, but if it is already known that there is no allergy to honey and citrus, you can make tea according to the classic recipe. Ginger tea warms, strengthens the flush of milk, invigorates and tones, improves digestion.

Tea from the store

It is much faster to brew tea in bags or instant granules. Many manufacturers have teas for nursing mothers, so you can choose a drink to your taste.

  • Humana. A universal drink that helps not only improve lactation, but also accelerate the recovery of mother after childbirth. Humana is a granular tea containing plant extracts and vitamin C. All components of the tea are natural, the main ones are extracts of hibiscus, fennel, blackberry and verbena (More on Humana Tea).
  • Hipp. Another granulated drink for lactation, which is based on extracts of anise, fennel, caraway seeds, lemon balm and nettle. The latter components have a calming effect. Hipp tea will be useful for the baby, because its main components are recognized as very effective against colic (More on Hipp Tea).
  • Nestic. A budget option for instant lactating tea. In its composition, it is similar to the previous options, in addition, it contains rosehip juice and chamomile.
  • Lactavit. This drink is one of those that takes time to prepare. Tea is a mixture of dill, fennel, caraway seeds and nettle leaves. Unlike its granular and sweetened “colleagues,” Lactavit does not have a pleasant taste (Read more about Lactovit tea) .
  • Grandma’s basket. A series of packaged teas for nursing mothers is very popular among many women. Among the tea options for increasing lactation are aniseed tea and rosehip tea. It is very conveniently brewed, tastes good.

Of course, the problem of milk shortage cannot be solved with tea alone, because an increase in lactation is the result of properly established natural feeding, and not of mother’s nutrition or drinking, but it is quite advisable to use tea as an auxiliary measure. If you do not expect a miracle effect from tea and really evaluate the possibilities of this method, then you can really establish the production of milk and improve your health, because plant decoctions are useful for the weakened body of a young mother.

When I had a decrease in milk, I tried Lactavit tea. But I can’t say that it was he who helped as I have tried different recipes, for example, a decoction of caraway and lemon, and generally drank a lot. Lactation teas are more likely to discipline mom so she drinks more fluids.

But I didn’t have 4 milk in the first days. it was a little colostrum, the son was hungry, shouted, cried. from the first days, the neighbors in the ward of their children began to feed the mixture, but I didn’t. Milk came only after discharge from the hospital, but immediately so much that the baby choked on milk at first. the main thing is to put the baby more often to the chest, then milk will appear. Well, lactogenic teas will not hurt.

I drank black tea with milk throughout the entire feeding period. It really helps to improve lactation. But at 6 months, the son began an allergy. As it turned out for milk. Therefore, I switched to herbal teas. But in any case, a warm drink is a must for a nursing mother!

I always thought that tea to increase lactation is nonsense. But I was faced with the problem of a lack of milk after childbirth. I tried a lot, nothing helped. My husband went to the pharmacy and bought me HIPP tea. And he helped !!!
