Breastfeeding Fish

The benefits of fish for a nursing mother

  • Vitamin D contained in fish allows calcium to be absorbed completely in the baby’s body;
  • Fish is easier to digest than meat, and thanks to this it normalizes stool and has a beneficial effect on the intestines of a nursing mother;
  • Essential omega-3 acids, which are rich in fish, strengthen the cardiovascular system of both mothers and the baby;
  • The protein of fish is perfectly absorbed by the body, and it creates a barrier to the formation of salts of lactic acids and uric acids, which has a beneficial effect on the kidneys of mothers, who, after giving birth, rearrange their function to the “pre-pregnancy” mode of operation and need additional protection.

Contraindication to the use of fish during breastfeeding there may be a mother's predisposition to food allergies. If she previously showed allergic reactions to any type of food, it is worthwhile to postpone the introduction of fish into food during lactation. In this case, one should start eating fish six to eight months after giving birth, 20-30 grams per intake.

Now let us examine separately the different types of the fish that is most popular and most often happens on our table, and evaluate the benefits of each of them for a nursing mother.

Types of fish and features

1. Red fish (salmon, pink salmon, trout, salmon, etc.) is a champion in the content of healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Red fish when breastfeeding is allowed for use, but in moderation, because it is a fairly allergenic product.

2. Salted fish By definition, it contains a large amount of salt, which can lead to an imbalance in the functioning of the kidneys, the appearance of edema. Therefore, salted fish with HSNot recommended to nursing mothers.

3. Smoked fish It will not bring any benefit, because when processed by smoke or in a fish smokehouse, most of the nutrients are destroyed. But carcinogenic substances on the contrary accumulate, which, with prolonged use, leads to the formation of chronic diseases of the body, and even oncology. Also, insufficient processing of the fish helps to ensure that parasites are not destroyed in it, which can lead to serious disorders of the body.

4. Dried fish in most cases, it is saturated with salt, which disinfects it, but is also unsuitable for food by a nursing mother.A large consumption of salt can lead to the fact that it accumulates in the chest ducts and changes the taste of milk, and this will lead to the abandonment of the baby from the breast. Dried fish during breastfeeding is not the best product, so take care of your baby's health and refuse to eat during lactation.

5. River fish contains many bones, but this does not deprive it of its useful qualities. If you cook such fish for a couple or boil broth from it, this is an excellent dish for a nursing mother. River fish during breastfeeding is useful, but only when it is cooked correctly and without the use of oil.

6. fried fish contraindicated for use. Since roasting takes more than 15 minutes, this time is enough for all useful substances to have time to collapse under high heat treatment in oil.

7. Dried fish in its nutritional value is akin to dried. Of course, in it, in natural preparation - salting and drying, both omega-3 acids and protein are stored, but the increased salt content cancels out all the benefits for the nursing mother. Therefore, dried fish during breastfeeding is temporarily prohibited.

Remember that fresh and chilled fish have the greatest value, but frozen fish already lose half their useful qualities.

The health of you and your baby depends on the organization of the diet during breastfeeding. Include boiled, stewed fish in the food, one to two times a week within 50 grams. This will be enough to provide the body with all the benefits that are in the fish.

    I remember how I wanted smoked fish in the GV, it was just impossible to resist))) But what can’t you do for the sake of the baby!

  2. Margarita

    Any smoking is immediately eliminated - there are carcinogens - this, in general, is undesirable to use, and especially for lactating and pregnant women! During lactation, I cooked steamed milk hake - tender meat. I love salmon, but in our region it is not cheap, so everything was in moderation!)

    Girls! Save! Lactostasis developed, drank an antibiotic, didn’t feed the baby yet, because there’s expressed milk in the freezer. Foolishly ate a piece of smoked mackerel yesterday ((((((when can I continue to feed?
