40 basic things a child should be able to do at home from the age of 2 to 13

Independence in a child must be developed almost from the cradle. The principle of "I'm all by myself!" can turn violently against you when your child refuses to clean up toys and do the dishes. You will not find time for yourself, and you won’t even have time to do household chores. Therefore, it is in your interests to help the child learn independence and do things himself that he can do. And what these things are, you will learn further.

2-3 years

In this age period, children already know how to understand speech and express their thoughts, albeit not yet exactly. This means that you can instruct the child to perform a number of simple tasks:

  • ask them to put the cubes in the toy basket;
  • put your scattered clothes in a closet (this is a good preparation for the kindergarten, where children should dress and undress on their own);
  • water a houseplant;
  • wipe the table;
  • stack any scattered objects in piles and boxes;
  • wash the handles yourself.

All these tasks must be completed with the participation of adults. First, mom or dad show the baby how to complete the task. Then the child tries to do everything himself. You can turn a work into an exciting process, for example, add an element of a game or a scene. The child will love these activities so much that he will be happy to take on any task.

4-5 years old

At this age, the child has already developed fine motor skills of hands, hearing, vision, logical thinking. He notices everything, shows attention and activity, which means that he can easily perform such household chores:

  • take care of pets: pour them food and change water;
  • take dirty things to the basket;
  • dress and undress yourselfwhile neatly folding their clothes in a closet;
  • to help mom with household chores: wipe the dust on the shelves and vacuum (my son, for example, at this age is already washing dishes with might and main);
  • water indoor plants, wipe dust from their leaves;
  • make your bed;
  • wash the pens;
  • brush your teeth, wash your ears and wash;
  • help mom set the table and remove the dirty dishes from the table;
  • take out the trash;
  • help with cooking dinner (add, stir, remove from the fridge).

As for the latter, my five-year-old son, when I start cooking, always becomes next to me. Moreover, he not only observes, but also takes an active part in this process. He cuts products with me, rubs on a grater, and interferes. It helps me even sculpt cutlets and dumplings. Many mothers dream of an assistant daughter, and I have an assistant son.

6-7 years old

This is a schoolboy.An independent person who is able to navigate in space without adult supervision. Mom is not around, so you have to do everything yourself. First graders know almost everything that is required of children at their age:

  • to do school homework, but with the help of parents;
  • independently collect a briefcase to school (a sports bag if engaged in a sports section);
  • cook food for school;
  • clean up your desk and in your room;
  • to put washed clothes in a closet;
  • take care of pets: feed them and change the water;
  • take care of domestic plants;
  • help mom set the table and clean the table;
  • wash dishes or put dishes in the dishwasher;
  • use a mobile phone;
  • independently heat food in the microwave;
  • wash yourself in a bath or shower;
  • look after the little kids;
  • make your bed and even change your bedding;
  • independently cut the nails on the hands and feet, clean the ears;
  • make simple purchases - if the store is near the house, the first grader may well independently buy bread or milk;
  • help mom cook food, for example, cut vegetables into a salad.

8-9 years old

home help

At this age, children are already becoming teenagers. They are fond of gadgets, computer games, begin to show an affinity for certain hobbies. What can they do?

Almost everything can:

  • go shopping independently;
  • walk with pets, fully care for them;
  • prepare the first meal: sandwiches, toasts, salads, drinks;
  • independently load household appliances: washing and dishwasher, microwave, vacuum cleaner;
  • actively use the phone, master the computer (by the way, this is the time when children can succumb to the passion for computer games and the Internet).

If at this age you will be able to teach your child to regularly help you in the kitchen and with cleaning, in the future he will do it for granted. Miss the moment - and it will be almost impossible to re-educate the lodging teenager.

10-12 years old

At this age, first love is already possible. And from that period the very notorious transitional age begins. Despite this, a child of ten to twelve years old must be able to:

  • take care of your body, observe hygiene and independently all the necessary procedures for this;
  • wash your own linen - panties, socks, tights;
  • to do homework, go to circles, sections, develop and constantly learn something new;
  • look after your younger brother or sister;
  • to conduct the first experiments in cooking (if it is a girl, although boys are occasionally also interested in this matter);
  • clean the house, wipe dust everywhere;
  • walk with animals, look after them.

13 and older

At 13 years old, many adolescents begin to flee from their affairs and move on to their hobbies. But this is not worth indulging: after all, they are already quite old, and they already know a lot of things, namely:

  • fully assist with cooking and cleaning;
  • go to the store for shopping;
  • to do all the homework on their own, without involving adults;
  • care for pets and younger households.

Work and the distribution of responsibilities in the family is the best way to raise a child responsible and independent. In Japan, it is a natural thing to teach children from an early age to help around the house. And Japanese mothers, as you know, are the best in the world, so feel free to take an example.
